Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Lower School teachers and staff are thrilled to have our students back on campus. Thank you for your patience with us as we navigate the first few days of On Campus learning. Carpool this morning was longer than usual as students were bringing computers, nap mats, towels, water bottles, and other supplies.
Please have your student ready to go when you pull up in the horseshoe or to the 26th Street gate. Your student should have his/her mask in place and backpack and lunch kit readily available for a quick exit of your vehicle.
Please reread the Arrival and Dismissal procedures and adhere to all guidelines. There may be a police detail that could issue tickets for non-compliance of carpool routes and procedures.

Good morning,
We are having technical difficulties this morning on the Maine Campus that's not allowing teachers to log in to their synchronous sessions. Teachers are currently trying to make other arrangements to meet their classes online for their synchronous learning times. Absences will not be counted against students who are unable to attend their live sessions due to this issue; however, students will be responsible for their asynchronous assigned lessons.
With HEART,
Lower School Administration

Parents and Guardians,
Please see the Arrival and Dismissal Procedures for Maine Campus Lower School Grades K-4th. Please read the entire documents as important information has been shared.
Thanks

Black and Gold Saints Shirt Days ALL campuses: Friday, September 11 and Monday, September 14. Geaux Saints!! #whodatnation

School breakfast and lunch are now available at no charge to all Discovery School students under a temporary waiver from the USDA.
The free meal service started Tuesday, Sept. 8 and will continue through December 2020 or until the federal funding runs out. All students are eligible, whether they are learning online or on-campus.
Families who think they may qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch are still encouraged to apply so there is no lapse in meal service when the USDA waiver expires.

Dear Kindergarten Discovery On Campus Families,
The Discovery schools use an English Language Arts curriculum called Fountas and Pinnell Classroom. It is a comprehensive literacy program that includes interactive read alouds, word study, and guided reading. We would like to assess our students using some additional assessments that will help us understand their early literacy skills.
These assessments take a lengthier amount of time to complete than the initial screeners we conducted, which is why they were not completed at the beginning of the year. The early literacy assessments are designed to be conducted in person and we are asking for you to sign up with your child’s teacher for a testing slot in person. The assessment takes on average about 20 minutes per student and gives us a comprehensive idea about your child’s strengths and areas for growth in early literacy.
Sign Up to Complete Assessment in Person
These assessments will take place on campus. All faculty and students will wear masks and temperatures will be taken before entering the building. Please make sure to be on time and have your carpool sign visible for drop off and pick up. Please keep your child in your car while you wait for the temperature check. Drop off will be on 25th street by the school cafeteria entrance. Students will be assessed in their homerooms with their teachers to complete their assessments. Please be on time to pick up your child.
When signing up please make sure to put your child’s name and teacher’s name.

Parents and Students,
Yesterday we noticed an error in the calendar rotation which would cause an imbalance in synchronous and asynchronous days. While correcting this mistake, we decided to recreate the calendar so the days are actually colored BLUE or GREEN. This allows everyone to be working off of the same calendar.
Please use the link below to find the updated BLUE/GREEN synchronous calendar for the 2020-2021 school year.
Sincerely,
Discovery Schools Administration

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We wish that you could have seen how delighted your children were to be back on campus. Unfortunately, our on campus learning was short lived, but we are planning for more intentional online learning than last spring. Our students did get to meet their teachers and begin to form a relationship with them. During our professional developments, our teachers and staff have learned so many innovative and interactive strategies to engage your students. Our morning sessions will look and feel like school as our teachers will be instructing their students from their classrooms.
This year, each student will receive his own personal computer to use for the school year. Students will have the opportunity to log on to their computer and see their teacher presenting lessons live. Students will also be able to see and interact with their peers during the lessons. Your child’s teacher will be sending an email with information about when to log on for their synchronous learning lessons. Synchronous learning lessons will happen at the same time every day starting Tuesday, August 18th. In the afternoons, students will watch science and social studies videos, complete projects and assignments, and participate in virtual co-curricular activities. A dedicated learning facilitator is the most advantageous way to implement instruction for young children.
Here are some things we can do to make online learning more successful:
Have a designated learning space for your student (a desk or table)
Free the learning space from distractions such as phones ringing, dogs barking, and siblings playing
Students will wear uniforms
Students will come with HEART and their supplies prepared at 8:30am for learning
Attendance will be taken and completed work submitted to OnCourse by 8:30pm
While our “new normal” is not what we desire, our intentional online synchronous learning is actually a way to “teach” our students rather than only providing work for them to complete. It is extremely important to check your email regularly for messages from your teacher and administration. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we pivot to Online Learning once again.
