Virtual Attendance for Lower School Families Hello Discovery Lower School Families, We are very excited about our new online learning program. Our students and teachers have really stepped up to the challenge and are making strides in posting and completing work online during this unexpected time of separation. Just as attendance is a critical component of traditional education, it is equally important in non-traditional, online school. Online attendance, for our program, is based on participation in the entire process. Here is a brief breakdown of our attendance procedures: Students will receive attendance credit for doing assigned online classwork. Teachers will mark student attendance in OnCourse based on work submitted and contacts made with them. Students should use Google Classroom to determine what is expected each week and ensure those things are completed by the deadlines provided by each teacher. Administrative Assistants will verify attendance and note any contact made with families and feedback received. Deans or Administrators will contact students and parents/guardians when students have shown little or no participation each week. A plan will be implemented to ensure the student completes online assignments, including counseling services as appropriate. Administrators will follow up with students and parents/guardians with major concerns of non-participation. If a family has an unusual circumstance where a student is unable to participate for a given time, the parent should contact one of these individuals to explain the circumstance and provide documentation, as appropriate. 1st - 4th Grades [email protected] K Rivertown [email protected] K Jeff Campus [email protected] From our virtual HEART, KDHSA Lower School Administration Team

Dear Discovery Parents and Guardians, Honors Transportation will begin the delivery of student materials left on the campuses tomorrow, 3/19/20. Student materials have been bagged and organized for home delivery. Deliveries will take place between the hours of 8am and 7pm Thursday through Saturday. If necessary, we will deliver on Sunday as well. For those of you who live in apartments, gated communities or on streets with limited access, the drivers will phone you prior to their arrival and ask that you meet them on the corner or out front of your residence. If your door or porch is accessible, the drivers will leave the materials outside. Please continue to be patient and flexible as we work together through these challenging times. We greatly appreciate Mr. Wells and all of the bus drivers at Honors Transportation for always showing HEART. If you have any questions and/or concerns please call our Director of Operations, Mr. Nick Walker directly at 504-234-4528. Kindly, KDHSA Administration

3/18/2020 Dear Lower School Discovery Families, We write this letter with very mixed emotions as we venture into a “new normal” for our KDHSA community. Everyday events have changed so quickly that we haven’t had time to fully adjust. Please be mindful that we want to take our next steps slowly and steady so as not to overwhelm our teachers, students, and families. Our Lower School teachers and staff are sending home electronic platforms so that your children can continue learning during the time spent away from school. Please do not feel that students need to complete all assignments perfectly or completely. We are trying to make the learning fun and engaging for our little Swamp Owls. We just want our students to do their best and enjoy the learning process away from school. We will be working mostly with Google Classroom as the main hub for your student’s daily assignments. In the daily assignments, teachers will post videos, links, access to online platforms, and fun, engaging activities. Please see below for a video tutorial on how to access Google Classroom. Google Classroom Tutorial for Parents We thank you for your continuous support throughout the school year. Now more than ever, we are searching for structure and some sense of normalcy. We are hoping that our Google Classroom platform will provide a routine to organize learning activities for your students. Initially, teachers will be emailing you information that is already posted on Google Classroom. If you need assistance, please reach out to your child’s teacher or one of our Lower School administrators. Because Google Classroom is a new platform for all of us, we are asking for your patience as we launch this new learning experience for our students. We are learning together through this process and your feedback is crucial. When providing feedback, please be flexible, caring, and collaborative. We can’t wait to work with our students and their families to make this a successful learning experience for all. Good Afternoon KDHSA Families: We are busy planning a robust online learning program for our students during this unusual time. We know the demands on families are high now. Our program will have routines, rituals, fun challenges, and academic challenges. It was created over the last 5 days and will have glitches. We will work through those glitches with you. This is what we desperately need now. We NEED to know who is connected to the internet! We NEED to know who has computers at home! Please take a few minutes today to respond to this survey. We are trying to get computer access or paper packets to all 1,850 swamp owls. A quick response will help with our planning! 3/10/2020 Dear Discovery Parents and Guardians, The safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. Our school is taking proactive steps following District and CDC guidelines to ensure the health and safety of our school community and the community at large. In order to limit interactions, the Discovery Administrative Team is canceling the following events until further notice: All Discovery Field trips are canceled until further notice. No new Field trips will be planned at this time. Field trip money already collected will be placed in a class account to be used on a future field trip. If by year’s end, we have not been able to schedule a field trip, we will use the funds for a class party/activity. All upcoming Coffee Chats and PTO Meetings are canceled until further notice. Parent Conferences will be handled through phone conferences. We are canceling in-person parent conferences on 3/13/20. Seniors off campus for ACT Day has been canceled. We will notify parents of an alternative plan. All HEART Award assemblies are cancelled until further notice. Students will receive HEART awards in their classrooms from a traveling Admin Team. When we no longer have to limit interactions, we will schedule a HEART award celebration with parents to recognize the students. At this point, Discovery is following the District and State guidelines and not canceling school sporting events. We will monitor this daily. We receive daily updates and guidance from the District, State, and the CDC. We will continue to closely monitor parish, state, and national guidance on recommendations to keep the public safe during the COVID-19 and follow their guidelines as needed for our community. Thank you for the privilege of educating your children. With a Protective HEART, The Discovery Administrative Team

Dear KDHSA & Prospective Parents: Due to Covid-19, Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS) is advising all Jefferson Parish Public Schools to cancel or postpone any large gathering event until further notice. This advisory impacts our large public lottery scheduled for this afternoon Tuesday, March 10, 2020. The lottery will still be conducted with our lottery team, but will be closed to the public. Due to privacy laws, we are unable to broadcast the lottery on Facebook Live or any other broadcast system. The lottery team is committed to working diligently after the lottery to email all results to parents by this evening. Please know the notification may come late in the evening as we have 1,991 applicants. We look forward to seeing and greeting our large pool of applicants each year and apologize for any inconvenience. Discovery is following the advice from JPPSS and the CDC to keep our community safe. After you receive your placement or wait list status, our Admissions Team will be available to answer any questions during the coming weeks.
