Purpose: KDHSA’s 4-week Culture Awareness Campaign #PassportToPeace celebrates our school’s diversity while building cultural competence throughout campus.
- All planned activities will occur during Co-curricular, Homeroom, Lunch, and Morning Meeting.
- Each PreK-4th class will research and create flags for their chosen country in Library/Art.
- 5th - 9th will follow the schedule below:
Week 1: March 6 - 10 Europe and Asia
- Cultural Word of the Week: “Gōngchāi” (Mandarin for Tolerance)
- Art: Students will study a featured artist from Europe or Asia.
- Drama Students: World Poetry - Tuesdays and Thursdays in the cafeteria.
- Graphic Arts: A public service announcement (PSA) highlighting some of the foods, holidays, religions, and traditions of the continent or country of the week will be shared with teachers to show during the students homeroom classes.
- Music: Students will learn about music and instruments from countries within Europe and Asia. Students will learn Funiculi Funicula and Frere Jacques.
- Physical Education: Students will be introduced to the game of Cricket.
- Taste of Europe and Asia: a sample of native cuisine will be available for students and staff to enjoy during lunch on 3/10.
Week 2: March 13 - 17 North America
- Cultural Word of the Week: “Tolerance”
- Culture Collages: Students will decorate hot air balloons at home to represent their family’s heritage. Ms. Morenc’s classes will be creating a collage to be displayed on campus.
- Art: Students will study a featured artist from North America.
- Drama Students: World Poetry - Tuesdays and Thursdays in the cafeteria during lunch.
- Graphic Arts: Monday, a Public Service Announcement (PSA) will be showed in 5th - 9th grade homerooms.
- Music: Students will sing Day-O! (Jamaica).
- Physical Education: Students will be introduced to the game of Basketball.
- Taste of North America: a sample of native cuisine will be available for students and staff to enjoy during lunch on 3/17.
Week 3: March 20 - 24 Central and South America
- Cultural Word of the Week: “Tolerancia” (Spanish for Tolerance)
- Big Brothers & Sisters Club will visit lower school to read culturally diverse literature.
- Art: Students will study a featured artist from Central or South America.
- Drama Students: World Poetry - Tuesdays and Thursdays in the cafeteria during lunch.
- Graphic Arts: Monday, a Public Service Announcement (PSA) will be showed in 5th - 9th grade homerooms.
- Music: Students will create maracas out of water bottles (Latin America). Students will learn De Colores and complete the Brazil portion of their passport.
- Physical Education: Students will be introduced to the sport Soccer
- Taste of Central or South America: a sample of native cuisine will be available for students and staff to enjoy during lunch on 3/24.
Week 4: March 27 - 31 Africa and Australia
- Cultural Word of the Week: “kuvumiliana” (Swahili for Tolerance)
- Community Works drummers will perform cultural music at lower school morning meetings.
- Art: Students will study a featured artist from Africa or Australia.
- Drama Students: World Poetry - Tuesdays and Thursdays in the cafeteria during lunch.
- Graphic Arts: Monday, a Public Service Announcement (PSA) will be showed in 5th - 9th grade homerooms.
- Music: Students will complete Africa portion of passport. Students will learn Che che koolay, Siyahamba, and Haere (Farewell).
- Physical Education: Students will be introduced to Aussie Rules Football
- Taste of Africa or Australia: a sample of native cuisine will be available for students and staff to enjoy during lunch on 3/31.
